Target: macOS 13 or later · Apple Silicon and Intel.
Older macOS versions, Intel Macs and additional monitor/dock setups still need device validation.
Get started.
- Open the DMG and drag Lantern into Applications.
- Open Lantern from Applications and use the menu bar controls.
- Enable local network or phone control only when you want to connect other devices on a trusted network.
Verified updates check at launch and every 15 minutes while Lantern runs, then download, install and restart automatically. There is no update opt-out setting. Protected app folders may require system permission.
Older development builds or clients with updates disabled need one manual installation.
About this preview.
Native checks have run on the release Mac running macOS 27. Compatibility across older macOS versions, Intel Macs, sleep/wake, dock replug, fullscreen and Spaces, mirroring, clamshell, login and automatic update restart is still being tested. Please report issues with your monitor and dock details.
Built for your menu bar.
- Individual display, whole-computer and network-wide brightness controls.
- Saved brightness presets across connected computers.
- Optional phone control from a paired browser on your local network.
A note on displays.
Hardware brightness support depends on your monitor, cable and dock. External hardware DDC control on Mac requires Apple Silicon.
Intel external displays, DisplayLink and displays without a hardware control path can use software dimming. It darkens the picture without switching off the backlight and requires Lantern to stay running.
Restore local displays from the app or with Control + Option + Command + R.
